scan0008Evelyn Washington, 87, of Marshall died Monday, September 28, 2009 at St. Luke Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Visitation wil lbe from 10-11 AM Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.

Evelyn Was born April 15, 1922 in Miami, Mo. the daughter of Jerry Allen and Virgie Jacques. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she was a member of  the Senior Choir, the Mother Board and the WMU. She was also a part of the Foster Grandparents program.

Survivors include her daughter Ruby Hayes and her husband Fred Hayes Sr., two grandchildren and one great-grandchild and one sister Angie Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents 2 brothers and one sister.

Alice Jean Grant

scan0007Alice Grant, 74, of Columbia, died Sunday Sept. 27 , 2009 at University of Missouri Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday at the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at the H.T. May and Son Funeral Home, 2207 Holly Ave., Columbia, Mo.

Alice Grant was born October 9, 1934 in Fulton, Mo. the daughter of Raymond Bagby and Julia Anderson Wright. She was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the Inspirational Choir and was a member of the WMU. She was a member of the NAACP and a part of the Legal Redress Team, She was a member of the Jollys’ Social Club and the Modernettes Social Club, she was a past Union Steward for the Harry S. Truman Veteran’s Hospital where she retired on September 30,  1996 after 24 years of service. She was also a member of the Blacks in Government group and the EEO Committee.

Survivors include her husband Billy G. Grant of the home, two daughters Lonzella Bush of Birmingham, AL., and Fran Tibbs of Columbia, two sons Wendell Bagby and Darryl Grant both of Columbia, one sister Karen Warren of Columbia and 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Billy Joe “Kid” Marshall

scan0005Billy Joe “Kid” Marshall, 77, of Columbia, died Monday at University of Missouri Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday at Fifth St. Christian Church 401 N. 5th St., Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home, 2207 Holly Ave., Columbia Mo., visitation will also be Saturday from 12-1 PM at the church.

Billy was born October 6, 1931 in Columbia, the son of Leroy Marshall and Sarah Eugenia Wingo. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He worked at the University of Missouri for 37 years.  He was a member of the 5th St. Christian Church. He was a graduate of Douglass High School.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn Marshall of the home, three children Arnetta Marburgh  and Steven Marshall both of Kansas City, Mo, and a daughter Belita Marshall of Tulsa, OK., his mother-in-law Ollie Mae Herndon, his brother-in-law Floyd(Kay)Logan and family of Las Vegas, NV., 2 very special cousins A’lyce(Wilson) McKinney and Craig(Mary) Thompson both of Portland, Or. 5 grandchildren  and one great-grandchild.

 Gail was born February 14, 1972 in Kansas City the daughter of Gilbert Cowans and Oceola Carter.

 survivors include 4 sisters Betty Williams, Debra Wright, Valerie Carter an  Sheila Hemingway and 4 brothers William Carter, Frank Carter, Sylvester Webb and Gilbert Carter

Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the H.T. May and Son  Funeral Home in Sedalia, and from 11-12 PM Thursday at the church.

 Anita was born August 30, 1951 in Clinton the daughter of Leo Brame and Itha Hicks . She was a member of the Burns Freewill Baptist Church in Sedalia.

Survivors include her mother Itha Hicks of Clinton, one brother Curtis Brame of Clinton, 4 sisters Alice Ross, Katherleen Newbill and Marchita Jackson all of Sedalia and Theann McKinney of Blue Springs, Mo.

Georgia Vaughn was born August 9, 1933 in Chickashaw County, Mississippi the daughter of Calvin and Benelle Eubanks Hamilton.

Survivors include one daughter SHerry Vaughn of Columbia, two brothers James Hamilton and Ray Hamilton, both of St. Louis, Mo., and two sisters Katherine Nicholson and Eloise Reese both of Lancaster, Ca.

scan0003Janice Hayes,67,  of Columbia died Thursday at University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10-11 Am Friday at the church.

Janice “Pan” Hayes was born July 21, 1942 in Columbia, the daughter of Harry and Margaret Frances Broadus Hayes. She was a member of both St. Paul A.M.E. Church and St. Luke UMC. She was a member of Amos Johnson # 30 O.E.S.

Survivors include her sons Melvin Hayes, Aaron Hayes and Jeffrey Hayes, her daughters Clorenda Hayes, Raecine Hayes and Oandrea Hayes, one sister Cheryl F. Hayes , 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Juanita was born April 30, 1964 in Marshall the daughter of Everett and Julia Parker Chess. She was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church in Kansas City.

Survivors include her parents of Marshall, 3 sons Cedric Chess, James Barry Jr., and Tyrone Chess, 3 daughters Shante’ Barry, LaShuna Barry and Tamika Chess, 5 sisters Denise Pollard, Veronica Boothe, Wilma Chess, Cynthia Johnson and Natalie McKee, 2 brothers Everett Chess and Stanford Jackson and 1 grandson .

Lila was born March 10, 1943 in Franklin, Mo. the daughter of Birch and Helen Bentley Stemmons. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church. She was retired from the Columbia Police Department. She was formerly involved with the Big Brothers- Big Sisters program.

Survivors include one daughter Katharine Jones of San Francisco, CA., and one sister Blondell Kelly of Columbia.

Charles E. ” Moose” Jackson

scan0001Charles E. ” Moose” Jackson, 70, of Jefferson City,  died Wednesday at Boone Hospital Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Tuesday at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home, 2207 Holly Ave.

Charles was born May 19, 1939 in Columbia the son of Morris Warren and Ethel T. Jackson.  He was a US Navy Veteran and a member of the Royal Dueces Social Club.  He was a graduate of the class of 1957  of Douglass High School.

Survivors include his wife Betty Jackson of Jefferson City, one son Jason Grant of Columbia, one daughter Shannon Grant of Columbia, one sister Evelyn Talton of Columbia and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister Helen Jackson Colbert and his parents.
