Ora Mae Hogan

Ora Mae Hogan, 92, of Sedalia took flight to her heavenly father on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Four Seasons Living Center in Sedalia. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Friday, July 1, 2011 at Wards Memorial Baptist Church, burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-1 pm Friday at the church.

Ora Mae Hogan was born May 5, 1919 in Georgetown, Mo. the daughter of William and Viola Thuston.

On January 12, 1950 she was united in marriage to Walker William Hogan and he preceded her in death on November 16, 1980. To this union brought two daughters Walk Ann Woolery of Sedalia and Marilyn Sypes.

Mrs. Hogan wasa a sucessful businesswoman of the city, owning and operating along with her husband the Handiest Laundry for 11 1/2 years.

She was an active member of Wards Memorial Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the motherboard and sang in the senior choir along with other organizations, until her health became inpaired. She loved to spend her time with her family, especially her grandkids, and she loved cooking.

She is survived by her daughter Walk Ann Woolery(Russell) of Sedalia, step-son Billy B. Hogan(Mattie) of Grandview, Mo., step-daughter Gloria Pryor of Columbia, SC., grandson Dustin Hogan of Sedalia, and son-in-law Darrell Sypes of Sedalia, she alos leaves to mourn her death several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Marilyn Sypes, one grandson Michael Hogan, three sisters Maude Clark, Lucille Thuston, and Lydia Frye, three brothers Mayo Thuston, Cecil Thuston and Tommy Thuston.

William Lee “Dee” Fisher Jr.

William Fisher, 74, of Fayette, passed into eternity of Saturday, June 25, 2011 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Faith family fellowship in Fayette. Burial will be in Fayette City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9-11 am Saturday at the church.

William was born May 13, 1937 in Fayette, Mo. the son of William Fisher Sr. and Margaret Douglas. He was the former mayor of Fayette, and a Auxillary Policeman for the cities of Boonville and Fayette. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. Dee was born and lived most of his life in  Fayette, Mo., but he also spent part of his childhood in St. Joseph, Mo.

He attended Lincoln School in Fayette, Bartlett HIgh School in St, Joseph, Mo. and Sumner High School in Boonville, Mo., where he graduated. He was united in marriage to Ann Mason Fisher in 1961.

Dee joined St. Paul UMC in Fayette, Mo. working wherever he could, administrative board, trustee board, singing in the c hoir, Black Methodists for church renewal, the Martin Luther King Committee, etc.

Throughout his life he was devoted to assisting the community. Through his work with the Police Auxillary in Boonville, Mo. and Fayette, Mo. he began to leave his mark. He was also a councilman for a number of years, and was then elected mayor of Fayette acheiving the feat of being the first African-American mayor of the city.

Dee was emplyed with the Bob Wilhoit Gas Station, The Missourian Newspaper, University of Missouri Journalism Department, General Telephone Co. , and the Daniel Boone Regional Library until his retirement.

Dee was preceded in death by his son William “Dinky” Fisher, and his parents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Anna G. Fisher,  four sons Norman(Susan)  Fisher of Hollister, CA., Steven T.(Crystal) Fisher of Fayette, Mo., Rodney Gaines and Antony(Lori) Gaines both of Columbia, six daughters Deborah(Randy) Bynum of Kansas City, Mo., Pamela Gaines, Tina Gaines, and Valerie(Tim) Gaines all of Fayette, Mari(Ranard) Warren of Columbia and Alfreda(Doug) Riley of Lawrence, KS., two brothers James(Winona) Broadus of Columbia and Danny(Pat) Broadus of Atlanta, GA., one aunt Gussie Pettigrew of Fayette , one uncle Charles Harris of Fayette, Mo., a longtime friend Kenneth McKee of Columbia,Mo.,  19 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Deacon Zula B. Wright

Deacon Zula B. Wright, 91, of Sedalia, journeyed to that land of whom no traveler had returned on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Sylvia Thompson Residence Center. Homegoing services will be  held at 11:00 Am Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Burns Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9-11 am Tuesday at the church.

She was born on July 29, 1919 in Sedalia and her parents were William and Zula Zella Whitley.  She was married to Clayton J. Wright, Sr. who preceded her in death on April 18th, 1985. 

Zula was raised in Sedalia and received her high school diploma from C.C. Hubbard-Lincoln High School in 1938.  She was a domestic employee for the late Dr. Robert Stewart and his loving wife, Jane Stewart, of Sedalia until her retirement. 

As a life-long member of Burns Chapel Free Will Baptist Church she participated in the following organizations:  Senior Usherboard, Usherboard Chorus, The Gospel Echoes, Circle #1, and The Red, White & Blue Club.  Although Zula always dreamed of becoming an elementary school teacher, she was able to fulfill her love of guiding children by teaching the Beginner’s Class as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Department Supervisor for 30 + years, and was the Instructor of the Youth Department of the Western Division Annual Association. Also she became an ordained Deacon of Burns Chapel Church in 1983. 

Zula leaves to cherish her memory one son and daughter in law, Clayton Wright Jr. (Gloria) of Sedalia, Missouri; daughter and son in law, Rev. Cynthia Fulks (Willis, III)  of Overland Park, Kansas; and daughter, Zula Poindexter of Sedalia, Missouri.  Additionally, she has five grandchildren; Anthony Wilson, Jarell Fulks, Justin Fulks, Donna Riley, and Daphne Price, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Carrie Whitley and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. 

 Zula was preceded in death by both parents; one daughter, Lois Marie Wright; four brothers, Harvey Whitley, Lewis Whitley, Thomas Whitley and William Whitley, Jr; and two sisters, Virginia Wilson and Dorothy Wright

Clemoris Allen

Clemoris Allen, 93, of Boonville, passed into eternity on Friday, June 17, 2011 at Cooper County Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 25, 2011 at St. Matthew AME Church in Boonville. Visitation will be from 10- 11 am Saturday at the church.

Clemoris was born on February 8, 1918 in Boonville, Mo. the daughter of the late Leslie and Mamie Brown. She was preceded in death by her brother Alvin Brown and sisters Gladys Crook and Maxine Estill.

 Clemoris was united to her high school sweetheart whom she met while attending Sumner School, the late Howard F. Allen on March 31, 1945. Together they shared 57 wonderful years. She and her husband enjoyed all facets of travel and vacationed in various parts of the world.

 She was a long time member of People Institutional Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington. Once moving to Boonville she attended St. Matthew AME Church.

 She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved daughter Ophelia Pierre of Denver, CO., her best friend and sister Roberta McGill, of Boonvillle, Mo., sister-in-law Eugenia Brown of Taylor, MI., nieces Sharon(Derryl) Durden of Seattle, WA., Chaneta Elbert of Boonville, Mo., Janice Estill of Columbia, Mo., Corita Estill of Olathe, Ks., Anita Guess(James) of Buffalo, Ny., Lucille(Clark) Smith of Bellvue, Wa.,  nephews Terrance (Carol) Crook of Boonville, Mo.,  Gilbert(Loretta) Crook of Clinton, Ma., Robert (Sonni) Estill of Houston, Tx., and a host of grand nieces and nephews along with many other relatives and friends.

Wilma Bush

Wilma Bush, 58, of Fayette surrendered her soul to Christ on Monday, June 13, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11:00 am at Holy Ground Church of God in Christ in Fayette, burial in Fayette City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 am Saturday at the church.

Wilma was born August 8, 1952 in Fayette, MO.  She was the daughter of Melissa Graves and Wesley Bentley.  She attended Lincoln School and was a 1970 graduate of Fayette High School. Wilma was united in marriage to John Lee Bush, May 23, 1982.  Wilma was as a Certified Nurse’s Aide and a Certified Restorative Aide.  She worked for many years at Fayette Caring Center, Phillips Home and the Braun Home.   

Under the leadership of Rev. Leon Hannah, Wilma dedicated her life to Christ at an early age. She was a member of Holy Ground Christian Tabernacle, Fayette, MO. where she continued her work for the Lord under the leadership of the late, Elder R.C. Paige and Pastor Denise V.  Johnson.

Wilma leaves to treasure her memory, her husband, her daughter, Melissa (Glenn) Ganaway of Fayette, MO, Her sons, John L. Bush, of Columbia, MO and Jerry L. (Jasma) Bush of Boonville, MO.   She also leaves to embrace her memory, her grandchildren LeKeea Graves, Columbia, MO, DeVonte Graves, Fayette, MO and Dez’zon Bush, Boonville, MO.  Two great-grandchildren  A’kiraa Lee and Raashad Lee, Jr. of Columbia, MO.

She also leaves to cherish her memory her mother, her sisters, Mary Ann (Leroy) Broadus, Fayette, MO, Mina Graves, Columbia, MO and Christine (Raymond) Smith of Columbia, MO.  Her brothers, Chester Graves, Fayette, MO, Marvin (Ruthann) Graves, Pilot Grove, MO, Robert (Peggy) Graves, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Ronald Graves, Boonville, MO. 

Wilma shared a special relationship with her great-niece, Makayla Barnette and her nephew, Jason Broadus.  She also leaves to honor her memory a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her father, two brothers, Melvin Graves and Melvin Gibson and one sister, Felicia Gibson- Jones. 

Because of Wilma’s childhood fun with mud pies, she was affectionately called “Dirt” by family and friends.  Wilma loved to play cards and could often be found enjoying a game of Gin Rummy with her daughter.  She also loved   sitting on her front porch while laughing and enjoying the company of her sons. Wilma loved and enjoyed her daily phone conversations with her mother.  She loved reading her Bible, crocheting, Word Search and Jigsaw puzzles. Wilma also shared with her great-niece, Makayla that her favorite color was blue.  Wilma always had words of wisdom and encouragement for everyone she knew and loved.

Lela A. May

Lela A. May, 100, of Boonville answered the call of the Lord on Monday, June 13, 2011 at Lakeview Healthcare Center in Boonville.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Morgan St. Baptist Church. Burial in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-2 pm Saturday at the church.

Lela was born January 5, 1911 in Cleaver, Mo. the daughter of Henry Patterson and Hattie Clarkston Patterson.

She joined Morgan St. Baptist Church at an early age, probably in high school. She said she would have joined earlier but she liked to dance and she thought she could not dance if she joined church. At Morgan Street Baptist Church she worked with Vacation Bible School, BTU, the Choirs, Circle # 3, The Sunbeams, Red Circle, and was a member of  The Central District. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Assn. Lela was also a member of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron of Princess Leah Chaper # 107 OES.

She taught school for 40 years before retiring. She taught at Bellair, Gooch’s Mill, Speed, Bunceton and Fayette.

She married Herbert Allen on July 29, 1939 and he died on January 6, 1951. She married Holwell J. May and he died on May 7, 1974. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Eula Nelson and Irene Miller, two brothers William Patterson and Owen Patterson, her aunt Ida Hardiman who raised her after the death of her parents, her cousins/sisters Ida Hardiman and Dorothy Hogan and her step-son H.T. May.

She leaves to cherish her memory two nieces, Pearl Allen of Boonville, and Rose Estill of Sedalia, her daughter-in-law Estelle May, four grandchildren Melodia Whitmore, Thomas E. May, Kathy May and Sherry Chapman, two first cousins Lillie Belle Smith and Nettie Frances Smith, they called her sister because they were raised together, eight great nieces Susan Stith, Denise Allen, Karen Hudson, Adrian Dixon, Anita Taylor, Sharon Hardwick, Teresa Smith and Patricia Shans, four great nephews Frankie Allen, John Wayne Smith, Howard Lee Estill and Charlie Brown. One play daughter Louise Smith and a host of great-great nieces, nephews , cousins and friends.

Lela will be sadly missed by her family, students and friends. We will miss her deep dimples and sweet smile. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and open her heart to any one in need. One of her greatest joys in life was working in church and being with her family.

Michael Warfield, 47, of Fulton, Mo. slept into the arms of Jesus on Friday, June 3, at Landmark hospital in Columbia. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Fulton. Burial in Southside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-1 Friday at the church.

Michael Warfield was born in Fulton the son of Kenneth Warfield and Willa Lee Day.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Delores Warfield of Fulton, one son Decarlo Tucker of Fulton,  his mother Willa Lee Day of Fulton, two brothers Damon Warfield and Mark Chan Warfield both of Fulton, four sisters Yolanda Williams of Fulton, Kelly Ocadiz and Kimberly Easley both of Wichita, KS., and Diane Jackson of Rochester, NY.,  four grandchildren, one of which Leandre Warfield he raised like a son.

Bobbie J. Brown, 70, of Columbia, surrendered her soul to Jesus on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Boone Hospital Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 9, 2011  at 1:00 pm at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home in Columbia. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-1 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

Bobbie Jo Brown was born May 6, 1941 in Jefferson City, Mo. the daughter of Charles and Annell Chapell Spence Mayberry. She graduated from high school in Los Angeles, CA., and in 1959 was united in marriage to Billy Brown. To this union two children Michael and Cynthia were born.  She retired after many years of devoted service to Shelter Insurance Company.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son Michael, her daughter Cynthia Bishop(Michael) her devoted and loving friend and companion James Smith, her granddaughters Crystal(Adrian), and Brianna, her grandson Derrick, her great-grandson Darius, her sisters Geraldine Banks, Joyce Gordon(Freddy) Claudelle Davis, and Charlene Mayberry-Turner(Carey) her brothers John Spence Jr.(Quinn), and Richard Spence and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother Annell Chappell Spence, her father Charles Robert Mayberry, , her sisters Carolyn ward and Linda Mayberry Chew, and her brother Donald Spence.
