Pearl L.M. Sims

Pearl L. Sims, 82, of Sedalia entered into eternity on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Ward’s Memorial Baptist Church. Burial at Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11-1 Tuesday at the church. 

Pearl Louise May Sims born March 7, 1929 in Syracuse, Missouri to Carrie L. Williams and Herman J. Miller, whom preceded her in Death.

 On March 7, 1965 she married Marvin E. A. Sims, who preceded her in death. Though she did domestic work outside the home, she dedicated her life to raising her children and grandchildren.  

 She was a member of Ward Memorial Missionary Baptist Church for many years.

 She is survived by Five daughters, Dorothy Mitchell(Robert) of Kingsport, Tn., Carrie Brown, Nancy Sims-VanBuren(Donald), Jessie Sims(William Staten), all of Sedalia, MO, two sons, Matt Sims(Grace), Herman Sims of Sedalia, Missouri and one step son Bishop Eugene Sims(Willene) all of Sedalia, MO. One Sister, Nancy Miller of Kansas City, MO and one Brother Herman Miller (Gloria) of Jefferson City, MO. Two sister-in-laws Mabeline Miller of University City, MO, and Doris Sims of Atlanta, Ga., and one brother-in-law, Arthur Seabury of Sedalia, MO, and a very dear friend, George Smith of the home.

She had 27 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and a host of very loved nieces and nephews and many surrogate grandchildren.

 Preceding her in death is one daughter, Sharon Miller, two granddaughters, Mildred L. Miller and Darla jean Sims, and four sisters, three brothers, one stepson and 2 great grandchildren.

H. Catherine Henderson

H. Catherine Henderson, 83, of Columbia was called home to glory on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Boone Hospital Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday September 23, 2011 at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home .

Hildrend Catherine(Cat) Hendeson was born in Wardell, Mo. to the late Doc and Jennie Mae Wheeler. They later moved to Charleston, Mo. with four other children Brother Robert Wheeler(Her Buddy), Three sisters Haughty B. Henderson, Vera M. Gordon and Ann Wheeler who all preceded her in death.

Catherine as she liked to be called was married to Alfreddy Henderson (deceased) at a young age. She was a faithful member of Mercy Seat Baptist Church in Charleston, Mo. and Friendship Baptist Church in Columbia. In past years this strong woman only completed an eighth Grade education, but went through manpower training in 1965 and received her nurses aide tech certificate where she retired from University Medical Center in 1986.

She gave birth to six children Jeanette Brewer(Sevand), Angelene Dixon, and Robert Williams all of Columbia, a special nephew Robert Wheeler Jr.(Candance) of Buffalo, NY., 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by two sons Milton Henderson, Willaim O. Henderson, one daughter Faye Falles and her parents.

She will truly be missed by all. May you be at peace my love.

George M. Taylor

George M. Taylor, 87, a lifelong resident of Fulton, until one year ago when he and his wife Erna moved to Heritage Village Assisted Living Center of Gladstone, Mo., went home to be with the Lord of Friday, September 16, 2011 at Liberty Hospital after a brief three week illness. He was born December 13, 1923 in Williamsburg to Frank and Corean (Holland) Taylor. In June 9, 1946 George united in marriage to Erna Mae Cooper of Fulton.

George worked at Harbison Walker Industries of Fulton for 37 years until his retirement a age 63. He was a faithful member of St. James United Methodist Church where he served in multiple roles for over 60 years. He enjoyed traveling and entertaining family and friends in the home and singing with the United Methodist Church Mens Chorus.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 65 years Erna Mae Taylor, his sister Annabelle (Taylor) Branham of Fulton, and sister-in-law Pauline WIlliams of Smithville, Mo., sons George Taylor Jr.(Gail) of Pasadena, CA., Paul Taylor Sr. Of Las Vegas, NV. , Elston Taylor(Kathy) of O’Fallon, MO., daughter Lois A. Sanders (Roy)of Kansas City, Mo., grandsons Paul Taylor Jr. of North Hollywood, CA., Elston Taylor Jr. of Wichita, KS., Brandon Taylor , Royce Taylor and Donald Lamar Lue all of Kansas City, Mo., Granddaughters Andrea Taylor Allen, San Bernadino CA., Valerie Lue of Atlanta, GA., and Gemia Taylor of Pasadena,CA., and Gianna Taylor of Pasadena, CA., 11 great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces , nephews and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Frank Taylor, Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 24, 2011 at St. James United Methodist Church in Fulton, Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Friday at the church.

Calvin Hopkins

Calvin Hopkins, 83, of Sedalia, transitioned into eternity on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 17, 2011 at True Vine Church of God in Christ. Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM Saturday at the church.

Hurley Calvin Hopkins was born April 8, 1928 in Otterville, Mo., the son of Hurley D. Hopkins and Beulah Mae Frazier Hopkins. He was a member of the Mt. Moriah Church.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Margaret I. Hopkins of Sedalia, two daughters Margaret Hopkins and Sherri Hopkins both of Sedalia, four sons James Hopkins of Newport News, VA., John Hopkins of Mexico, Mo.,  David Hopkins of St. Peters, Mo., and Freddie Woods of the state of Kansas and ten grandchildren.

Jean “Queen Bee” Broadus

Jean “Queen Bee” Broadus, 70, of Columbia, MO. answered the call of Jesus on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Second Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2-3 PM Saturday at the church.

Jean Broadus was born April 21, 1941 in  Columbia Mo., the daughter of Robert Williams and Mary Forbis.  She was a member of the Second Baptist Church and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Church Women United.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son Lanny Broadus of Columbia, three daughters Sherry Broadus of Fort Wayne, IN., Waltiua Broadus of Columbia, and Valencia Broadus of Kansas City, Mo., five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

David T. McBride

David McBride, 26, of Columbia entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 3, 2011 in Columbia. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be from 12-1 PM Saturday at the church.

David T. McBride was born March 20, 1985 in Columbia, Mo., the son of Kevin Christian and Angela McBride.

He leaves to cherish his memory his parents , two brothers Brannon Carter and Anthony Christian both of Columbia, two sisters Brittany McBride and Latara Christian both of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a sister Courtney McBride.

Gene Battles

September 2, 2011

Gene Battles, 67, of Columbia answered the call of the Lord on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Harry S.  Truman Veterans Hospital. Private memorial services will be held at a later date a Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Jacksonville, Mo.

Gene Battles was born was born July 28, 1944 in Little Rock, AR.,  the son of James Battles and Addie Young. Geno as he was known was a musician for many of the local churches in Columbia.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Vicky Battles of Columbia,  three sons Edward J. Battles, Delshawn Keys and Andre Battles, one daughter Manasha A. Edwards, two brothers James Battles Sr., and Robert C. Clingham.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
