DOROTHY A. LEE, of 413 West Cooper, Sedalia, died November 19, 2009 at 6:00 a.m. at her home.
Mrs. Lee was born February 29, 1912 in Sedalia, the daughter of John and Cora Jones. In 1943 she married Ralph E. Lee who preceded her in death.
She was a supervisor of Teen Town Center in Cadiz, OH. She received many Excellence Through Education Awards. Mrs. Lee has been informed that her name had been subitted for possible inclusion for an edition of “Who’s Who” in American Women.
Mrs. Lee was a member of Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church where she served on the Pastoral Advisory Committee, the Committee on Nominations, the Women’s Christian Society of Taylor Chapel, and had been the Church Organist for over twenty years. She was a member of Church Women United.
She graduated from Lincoln School, playing the violin in the School Orchestra; received an accomplished violinist certificate from the George R. Smith College after three years of violin lessons; attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO and played violin in the University Orchestra; graduated from Central Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary and Secondary Education, held SBD, TMR and EMR Certificates, graduating with a 4.0 grade point average and honors. During the summer of her graduation she did substitute teaching at the University.
Mrs. Lee had a teaching career of thirty-three years in Clarksville, Boonville, Warrensburg and Sedalia, MO. During her teaching career she gave two violin recitals.
She was a substitute teacher at Hubbard School and a teacher of night school Health Class at Jefferson School, both in Sedalia. Mrs. Lee taught craft classes and was the supervisor of the Hubbard School Cafeteria; a substitute teacher for Minniolia Day Nursery; Bible School teacher for the mentally challenged; a member and board member of the Negro Spiritual Choral Ensemble; Life Member of the N.A.A.C.P.; a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association; and a member of Queen City Chapel #47 OES.
Mrs. Lee’s last school was the E. W. Thompson State School, retiring as “Teacher in Charge”, and received a Certificate of Recognition of Dedicated Service. The E. W. Thompson State School was dedicated to Mrs. Lee in recognition of her leadership and service. She also did Home Bound teaching.
Survivors include her daughter of the home, Theresa Lee; two nephews: Rev. Dr. Charles P. Lucas of Cleveland, OH and Charles N. Jordan, Jr. of Westfield, NJ; an adopted daughter, Martha Heintzelman; grandchildren and many loving and caring friends, including Teresa Gilmore who provided extra care and love to Mrs. Lee during her final days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three sisters: Hazel Lucas, Geraldine Jones and Jewel Jordan.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church, Friends may call the day of the service from 11:30 am to 12 noon at the church. Queen City OES #47 will conduct rites from 12 noon to 12:30 pm. Funeral services will begin at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
